Thai pop-up brings Soul to Shawlands

Foodie fans who visited the Queen’s Park Arena Cafe this summer may already be in the know about social enterprise Soul Food Sisters. For the rest of us, there’s a one-night only, gourmet pop-up at the Glad Cafe on October 24.

The collective may be from nearby Govanhill, but their influences are worldwide, and the pop-up menu is a celebration of authentic cuisine from north east Thailand — following on from Thai Tuesdays at the Arena Cafe.

Soul Food Sisters director Thanyalak McAllion, who moved to Scotland eight years ago, will be showcasing her recipes — and she guarantees you won’t find them anywhere else in Glasgow.

She told The Extra: “The food in north east Thailand is different to the rest of the country and uses its own herbs and spices. I’m hoping the food I learned to make from mum back home proves popular with the people of Glasgow.

“There are no Thai restaurants in the southside and I want to give people a proper taste of our cuisine.”

The event runs 7.30pm until 10.30pm, and a £25 ticket will buy you three courses from a choice of two starters, three mains and two desserts (including veggie options).

It’s the first of many events to come for the non-profit group, made up of members from Malaysia, Poland, Spain and Cuba too.

Thanyalak added: “I think people like the fact we’re so diverse, as not many groups offer you food from five different countries.”
