Salt stockpiled for winter freeze

AFTER the worst winter in living memory, South Lanarkshire Council Roads Department and its staff are already gearing up for the tough months ahead.

As Clydesdale shivered in sub zero temperatures last year in the coldest December since records began council chiefs were already preparing to stockpile more salt.

And with an increase in the budget of £1 million it means 33,000 tonnes of salt has already been stored for the freezing temperatures – a huge increase on the 21,000 tonnes it had last year.
