New care home plans for Giffnock

Northcare (Scotland) Ltd has requested permission to build the 72-bed home on the site of a Mini showroom on Kilmarnock Road.

The proposals include a hair salon, private dining room and cocktail bar, as well as the cafe and cinema.

A planning report states the “destination space” offers “residents the opportunity of a “day out” without the need to leave the facility”. Visitors can also use these areas.

It adds: “There is also a potential to open up these spaces, particularly the café to wider public use, integrating the care home into the community.

“In addition there is a cocktail bar located on the second floor. The café and cocktail bar benefit from external terraces for use when weather permits.”

Northcare operates a number of homes across the central belt and is looking to expand its offering.

“The proposed development will provide much-needed accommodation for the ever-increasing elderly population, allowing them to live their lives with dignity and independence with specialist assistance at hand,” the report adds.

“The site is in a sustainable location within an established suburban location providing direct access to a range of services and facilities there within, and local amenities.”

Space on the site has also been identified for gardens for residents.

“A private residents garden to the rear provides much needed usable external space for residents to interact in a more informal environment. The building acts as a screen, enhancing privacy.”

A pre-application consultation event was held on January 14 at Tinto Primary School and was attended by local councillors Stephen Curran and Kyle Thornton.

The report adds: “Having studied the surrounding context it is felt that a three and a half storey proposal fronting Kilmarnock Road with a lower three storey element fronting the more serene Ledi Road would be an appropriate solution.”

The company has also submitted a pre-application notice to East Renfrewshire Council to build on old school playing fields at Drumby Crescent, Williamwood.

It is believed the development would be made up of a 68-bed care home and 22 assisted living apartments.
