Pastures new for local food project

The non-profit shop — which sells locally-sourced produce to fund sustainable food projects in the community — has been going strong since opening on Shawlands’ Skirving Street last year.

Now, the team are taking the local food revolution further, with a second store at 66 Nithsdale Road funded by the success of the first.

Founder Reuben Chesters told The Extra: “Skirving Street has been great for us, but it’s a small space and we’re using every inch.

“The Nithsdale Road site is a really nice space, probably three times what we have just now, and it will allow us to do more workshops and offer a wider variety of food — as well as a deli counter, selling homemade stuff.

“We’ll also have dried goods, and people can weigh out as much as they need - and bring their own tubs to take it home in, to reduce packaging.”

The idea behind Locavore — which means eater of local food — remains to promote the benefits of local food production for the southside.

In its first year, the project has funded seven new growing spaces and the planting of 100 fruit trees, as well as attracting 70-100 subscribers a week for its veg bag scheme.

Reuben added: “A lot of customers subscribing to the veg bag scheme — which provides a weekly allowance of seasonal produce - are in Strathbungo, so it seemed like a good location for the new shop.

“There’s lots to do for the opening weekend but we’re looking forward to it, and hope to see people there for free samples, seed planting and more info on events and sessions to come.”

The grand opening takes place on Saturday, 12-7pm, and all are welcome along to see the local food revolution in action.
