Lanark's landmark buildings becoming eyesores

Concerns were raised at the most recent meeting of Lanark Community Council on the deteriorating state of two prominent old buildings in the town, the former Royal Oak Hotel and the auction ring of the old Lanark Market.

The stone auction ring was supposed to open as a restaurant, but there is no sign of any activity at it.

And in January this year Lanark Community Development Trust moved to brighten up at least the look of the Royal Oak, right next to the station and the first thing visitors to the town see.

The Trust put up boards with details of the Wallace Trail, telling the story of William Wallace in Lanark, over the boarded-up windows of the Royal Oak, in a bid to improve the look of the semi-derelict building.

Now South Lanarkshire Council has been asked to investigate the structural state of the two buildings, both long awaiting redevelopment.
