Heartless thieves swipe elderly lady’s wheelchair

Cruel thieves swiped an elderly disabled woman’s wheelchair while she was shopping with friends in Bishopbriggs.

The robbers made off with the black chair with maroon handles from Strathkelvin Retail Park around 6pm on Saturday.

Lenzie woman Marjorie Rowney (82) is appealing to the public for any information.

She told the Herald: “We had received the wheelchair on loan from the Red Cross. It was being used by my elderly friend who was recovering after suffering health problems. I was acting as her carer.

“I helped her out of the wheelchair into the car but unfortunately we drove off and left the chair behind.”

When Mrs Rowney returned to the shopping centre a short time later, the wheelchair had vanished.

She said: “I went into a number of shops to see if someone had handed it in and also went to the shopping centre’s security office but no one had seen it.”

Mrs Rowney contacted the police and added: “I’d just like to put out an appeal in case it has maybe been used by kids, for example, for a laugh who have then maybe dumped it nearby.”

Anyone who can help should contact Kirkintilloch police on 101.
