Former Shawlands Academy pupil treads the boards

A talented student actress from Pollokshields has taken to the stage to perform for influential industry professionals ahead of her graduation.

Eva Hunter (19), who enrolled on the City of Glasgow College’s HND Acting and Performance course, appeared at Glasgow’s Scottish Youth Theatre for her end of year Diploma Show.

Eva, who attended Shawlands Academy, said: “I was required to perform two very different pieces, one quite serious and the other on a more light-hearted note.

“I chose a monologue from Fleabag, which is a play by Phoebe Waller-Bridge that was also made into a TV show on BBC 3.

“The monologue is about my character’s difficulties with her sister and her mum dying, then her dad abandoning her because he didn’t know how to cope with it.”

She added: “I chose the piece because I really enjoyed the TV show and the play is very funny.

“The part was a bit ‘out there’, as some sections were quite rude and not me at all, but I wanted to challenge myself with comedy and I enjoyed performing it.”

For her second piece Eva took part in a dual monologue from the Patrick Marber play Closer, with fellow student Rebecca Mcilroy.

She said: “The scene portrayed two women having a fight over men. It was also turned into a film with Jude Law, but the movie is not the same script as the play.

“I wanted to find something different to Fleabag that had a stronger female character.

“I also wanted the chance to work with someone instead of working on my own for both pieces, as I enjoy the chance to play off another actor.

“The diploma show was a great opportunity for everyone in the class to end on a high note as a final farewell. “I am now moving on to the University of the West of Scotland where I will continue my acting training through their BA in Performance course.”

Anne Macleod, acting and performance Lecturer at City of Glasgow College, directed the diploma show.

She said: “The student’s diploma show was a huge success and I was delighted to see how dedicated the students were during rehearsals.

“The annual show gives our graduating students the opportunity to perform in a professional environment which is great experience for them as they prepare for working in the industry.”
