Ryder Cup hero Monty will open the new centre, based at Monklands General Hospital and bearing his mother’s name after a long campaign in which the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation donated more than £1.2 million to Maggie’s.

Monty said: “I am hugely honoured to see Maggie’s Lanarkshire at the Elizabeth Montgomerie Building open.

“I feel immensely proud to have my mum’s name attached to a second incredible building in an area where I know Maggie’s is very much needed.”

Maggie’s Lanarkshire is the second Maggie’s Centre to be built in partnership with the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation with one being opened in Aberdeen last year.

Monty was not the only sports star donating cash to Maggie’s.

The £7,500 donation from The John Hartson Foundation will help with the running of the new building.

The John Hartson Foundation’s Elizabeth Emmerson presented Maggie’s Lanarkshire’s Lorrie Forsyth and Marion Taylor with the cheque.
