Coalburn world record cycle attempt

CLYDESDALE could cycle its way into the pages of the Guinness Book of Record this weekend.

But to do so, a thousand locals will have to literally get on their bikes.

The event starts on Friday and will see volunteers attempt to break the world record for bicycle-generated electricity production...with a 24 hour cyclethon at Coalburn Miners Welfare.

The record bid has attracted support from the Scottish Government and there have been messages of support from First Minister Alex Salmond and Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson.

Three local MSPs have also signed up to take part in the relay static cycling sessions.

The record attempt begins on Friday at 5pm and continues until 5pm on Saturday.

Some 450 volunteers have signed up but it is hoped as many as 1000 people will take part in the 24 hour marathon.

Said organiser James Kane: "We're encouraging individuals, schools, work places and groups to take part and use it to generate funds for other good causes or just for a free family day out!"
