See in the New Year at Clydesdale’s bonfires tonight

DESPITE the wet weather soaking the Hogmanay Bonfire in recent days, hardy souls in Biggar are ready to bring in the New Year in their usual way.

The bonfire has been growing since December 1 and local people are now expecting thousands to join them at the celebration.

That starts with a torchlight procession from the Cross Keys at 9.15pm, led by Tommy O’Donnell, the 81-year-old chosen to light this year’s bonfire.

Supported by Cornets Club members, pipe bands from Lanark and Biggar and a sea of burning torches, he will lead the crowds to the Corn Exchange to light the bonfire at 9.30pm.

Carnwath traditionalists also see out the old year with a bonfire in John Mann Park, with a parade leaving the golf club at 8.30pm.

You’ve still time to turn off the television, wrap up warmly, and brave the weather for a real taste of Scottish tradition!
