New kitchen opens at Stanmore House, Lanark, slideshow

SOMETHING was cooking at Lanark’s Stanmore Hose School recently – and it was the pupils who were the chefs!

Everyone would love to have an ultra-modern, brand new kitchen fitted but the one officially unveiled at the school for children with special needs didn’t represent just a home improvement but a whole life improvement for the youngsters.

The ‘switch kitchen’ means that every cooker, work surface and cupboard can instantly and automatically be adjusted for the person working it, electronic sensors lowering them to allow a wheelchair-using budding chef to get cooking.

It is the second major facility to be provided to the school by the charity Bright Horizons Foundation for Children.

Stanmore principal teacher Frances Reid said: “Our new Bright Horizons kitchen is going to make a huge difference to our young people. This beautiful kitchen is totally accessible and user-friendly.”
