Eastwood Entertainers set for a stroll down 42nd Street

It’s been 40 years of musicals, revues, one act plays and pantos for Eastwood Entertainers — and the local ‘am dram’ group is still going strong.

The troupe celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, having grown from a young mothers’ group trying to send the 77th Scouts on an overseas trip to a large company regularly gracing the Eastwood Park stage.

Club president Murray Constable told The Extra: “It started as a fundraising group for the 77th Disabled Scouts, to raise money for them to go to Denmark by putting on a pantomime.

“The name started out as the Pantomimers, and eventually changed to Eastwood Entertainers. Musical revues were added and eventually one act plays.”

By 1986, Eastwood Entertainers had won the SCDA British Finals for Mayor of Torantal and the club flew to Los Angeles.

Audiences have been treated to everyting from Fiddler on the Roof to The Full Monty (making a return in 2016) — and next week it’s time for a stroll down Broadway for 42nd Street.

Peggy Sawyer arrives in New York and lands a lucky break in the chorus of a new Broadway show — but when the leading lady is injured, it could be Peggy’s chance to step up and become a star, if she can just learn those song and dance numbers.

Murray added: “Audiences have always enjoyed an EE show, so I guaranteee they’ll enjoy this year’s.

“Music includes We’re in the Money, Lullaby of Broadway and, of course, the title song. There’s plenty of amazing tap dancing in this show too, so everyone will leave with a smile and spring in their step.

“As part of the 2014 legacy from the Commonwealth Games, we’ve attracted new members to come and join amateur theatre for the first time — the momentum from this keeps going, and Eastwood Entertainers are proud to keep the motto People Make Glasgow alive.”

Eastwood Entertainers are at Eastwood Park Theatre for 42nd Street Tues-Sat (May 5-9), 7.30pm plus a 2.30pm Sat mat. Tickets are £10-£14 from www.eastwoodparktheatre.co.uk.
