A free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery in 12 Years a Slave, released on Friday at the Showcase in Bargeddie.

Based on the incredible true story of Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and his fight for survival and freedom in the pre-Civil War United States.

Facing cruelty, personified by malevolent slave owner Edwin Epps (Michael Fassbender), as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity.

In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with Canadian abolitionist Bass (Brad Pitt) will forever alter his life.

Solomon’s story is directed by Steve McQueen and adapted by novelist John Ridley who previously wrote the screenplay for Red Tails which told the story of African American pilots facing segregation in the Tuskegee training programme during World WarII.

12 Years a Slave is rated 15 and runs 134 minutes.
