’Well fans urged to take control

MOTHERWELL fans have been urged to seize a unique opportunity to gain control of the club and make sure they never suffer the plight of Dunfermline supporters.

The Well Society is hosting a sign-up night at Fir Park tomorrow (Thursday) where fans can pledge money for a say in the running of the club.

The society has set a short-term goal of hitting £500,000, with around £400,00 already raised, ahead of an ultimate target of making £1.5 million to assume majority control.

Former owner John Boyle is making his shares available to Well fans with the money raised designated for a holding fund to help the club through cash flow problems.

Society chairman Graham Barnstaple, who is set to join the club board along with colleague Brian McCafferty, said: “This is a unique opportunity to secure the long-term future of Motherwell FC and gain control with the backing of the club.

“Dunfermline fans would jump at a similar opportunity given they were asked to raise money to save their club without getting assurances over the ownership.

“Hearts fans also recently raised about £1.1 million in a few weeks by buying shares which gave them no say in the running of their club.

“Now they are in the dark over the long-term future of their club after Vladimir Romanov suffered a crisis in his personal business interests.

“If we add the same £1.1 million to the figure we have already raised, we will gain majority control of Motherwell FC for the fans and provide stability to the club for years to come.

“While Motherwell have been in safe hands, this is our chance to make sure it stays that way for many years to come.”

Anyone interested in joining up, with packages starting from £300 for adults and £25 for children, should attend the Centenary Suite from 7pm. Existing members can also renew their annual subscriptions.

First-team players will be on hand to sign autographs and pose for photographs and there will also be the opportunity to have a tour of the stadium.
