Tricky cup away days for juniors

JUNIOR sides Bellshill Athletic and Thorniewood United take a break from league action this weekend when the first round of the New Coin Automatics West of Scotland Cup takes place.

Both sides are away to Super League opposition from Ayrshire with Bellshill travelling to play First Division Girvan and First Division Thorniewood heading to play Premier Division outfit Beith.

Thorniewood’s trip will bring back memories of their sensational win over Beith at the same stage of the competition two years ago when the Viewpark returned from Ayrshire after thrashing the Super League giants, and then trophy holders, 3-0 on their own pitch.

Bellshill, whose Central League First Division game at home to Dunipace on Saturday fell victim to the weather, are also facing familiar opponents.

They played Girvan in last season’s Super League First Division when they lost 3-2 away in January and drew 3-3 at Bellshill in April.

Both Saturday’s games will kick-off at 2pm and the Bellshill supporters’ club bus will leave The Orb bar at 11.45am.

Non-members will be welcome - to book a seat, call Alex Connor on 07563 605707.

Meanwhile the two local rivals have both been handed home draws in the second round of the Emirates Scottish Junior Cup.

Bellshill will play Thornton Hibs, currently third bottom of the East Region Central Division, while Thorniewood will meet Newmachar United, an Aberdeenshire side who only appeared for the first time in the junior ranks last season, finishing second in the North Region Division 2.

The ties are due to be played on Saturday, October 29.
