The heat’s on as hockey players face Greek test

Uddingston Hockey Club gents’ 1st XI travel to Athens tomorrow (Thursday) to prepare for the second half of the Aberdeen Asset Management National League 2 campaign.

They are attending an invitational tournament hosted by Ethnikos Hockey Club, of Athens, at the Olympic Hockey Centre created for the Athens games in 2004.

Uddingston will come up against opposition from Russian side St Petersburg HC and French outfit Le Touquet HC.

Club coach Steven Percy said: “This is an opportunity to get some guaranteed warm weather and purposeful training done before we start the second half of the season.

“In Scotland there are no guarantees of pitches being playable at this time of year. On top of this it gives us three games against good opposition that will be challenging.

“It’s a great opportunity for our players to experience hockey abroad and continue in our drive towards promotion to National League 1.”

Club captain Nairn Scobie added: “Our ambition is to travel there and play to the high standard of hockey we know we are capable of.

“Little is known of the opposition, but if we perform to our potential then I am confident of victories in the matches.”
