MORE than 100 young people from secondary schools across Lanarkshire competed in the 2012 Supercounty Triathlon.
In teams of two, participants were challenged to a gruelling course covering the disciplines of running, cycling and canoeing.
Cardinal Newman High School excelled with the boys’ teams of Shaun Rooney and Daniel McNulty, along with Kevin McKeown and Stuart McLuckie, being awarded overall first and second place respectively.
Motherwell girl Nadine Blakely and Margaret Newell, of Wishaw, who attend Firpark Secondary, competed for the first time, and were awarded an outstanding medal haul as well as overall second place girls’ trophy.
Head of Supercounty, John Scott, said: “The competition is intense, the course is very demanding and the weather can be also be a tough obstacle – but year after year the young people participate in this firm fixture within the sporting diary.
“To to excel in a multi-discipline sport requires great skill and perseverance.
“It’s always very encouraging when schools enter a team for the first time and I hope that Firpark Secondary join us again for next year’s event.”
