Dalziel Rugby Club’s players gave their coach the perfect wedding present last week with a 44-0 win over Hawick YM which secured their National League status.

Prior to the crunch ‘winner takes all’ final game of the season the team had a Skype based team talk with head coach Stewart Milne just minutes before his wedding.

And it paid off when the Motherwell side romped to a 44-0 win at Dalziel Park which condemned their opponents to regional rugby next

Dalziel took an early lead with a Darren Moon penalty before Fraser McKenzie got through a gap from a ruck two metres out to make it 8-0.

Moon added another penalty after 20 minutes but despite the best efforts of the Dalziel pack the score remained 11-0 at the break.

Hawick started the stronger team in the second half, knowing that whoever scored first would probably go onto win the game.

Thankfully for the 200-strong home crowd that was Dalziel as Ross Donnachie dived over in the corner for a try which Moon converted to extend Dalziel’s lead to 18 points with just over 20 minutes left.

Centre James Howatson then made a telling break before offloading to Cameron King who ran in the easy score under the posts, which Moon converted.

Five minutes later Donnachie arrived at the base of the ruck and gave a deft pop to Kris Watters who strolled over the line and give Dalziel the bonus point score. Moon again converted to put Dalziel 32-0 up.

Despite their fate appearing certain, Hawick YM ventured up the park and put Dalziel under pressure.

But Dalziel produced a quick counter attack which ended with Baxendale kicking through for King to chase, gather and score under the posts.

Moon again converted and in the aftermath of the try Hawick centre Shaun Desport kicked out and was shown a red card.

The scoring was completed from the last play when Baxendale went over the line and although Moon missed the conversion it mattered little as Dalziel secured National League status for another season.
