MOSSEND'S Derby Inn are officially the best pool pub team in the country after winning the inaugural Scottish League Championship organised by the Scottish Pool Association.
The championship took place at Rosyth and the Derby Inn players qualified by winning the Motherwell District Pool League for the seventh time in a row.
The first round saw the Derby Inn facing the Dunfermline, Bannockburn and East Kilbride league champions as the 16 participants were split into groups of four.
The top two teams in each group qualified for the last eight, with each game the best of 11 frames.
The Mossend team made it through their group in convincing style, beating Dunfermline 6-2, Bannockburn 6-0 and East Kilbride 6-4.
In the last eight they were up against Braes, from Falkirk, and won that tie 6-0. In the semi-final Derby faced Midlothian who tried to upset their momentum with some slow, grinding play, but an impressive 6-1 win for the Mossend team was the outcome.
Highly-rated Glasgow were their opponents in the final and Derby lost the first three frames, but they showed a never say die attitude to make it 3-3.
They took the next frame to go ahead only for Glasgow to draw level at 4-4. Derby went 5-4 up and Glasgow levelled again, but the Mossend team took control in the deciding frame to clinch a 6-5 victory and claim the title of Scotland's best.
Team members were — captain Stevie Hart, Shad Saleem, Kenny Blythe, Chick McCaig, Stevie Gormley, Robert Douglas, Angus Cockburn, Steven Hart jnr, Mark Williams, Derek Williams, Robert Williams, Kenny Donald, Billy Gilchrist and Gerry Quigley.
