Swimmers are splash hits

SWIMMERS from Motherwell Masters returned with an impressive medal haul from the Scottish Gas Masters open short course swimming championships at Scotstoun Leisure Centre.

The club won 27 gold, 19 silver and 11 bronze medals in the individual swims and a further eight gold, six silver and two bronze medals in the relay events.

The ages of the club’s 27 competing swimmers ranged form 27 to 82 and they helped the club placed third overall out of the 56 club taking part.

Lorraine Wheatley in particular produced a series of outstanding swims in the 45-49 years age group, breaking the British record in the 200 metres breaststroke event and securing three Scottish records in the 100m and 200m breaststroke and 100m individual medley.

John Brogan (75 -79 years) won his overall age group, also breaking three Scottish records in 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle and 100m individual medley.

He also received an individual trophy for his 50m freestyle swim, while Alison Freeland was another overall winner in the 60-64 years age group.

60-64 years: Jean Sinclair, silver 50m fly; Alison Freeland, gold 50m breast, 100m breast, 200m breast, silver 50m back and 100m ind med.

75-79 years: Marina McFall, gold 50m back, 200m back and 100m free, silver 200m free, bronze 50m breast, 50m free.

80-84 years: Janet Stobie, gold 100m ind med, silver 50m free, 100m free, 50m back, 100m back, 50m breast, 100m breast.

Gents 25-29 years: Andrew Kennedy - bronze 200m back.

45-49 years; Raymond Olsson - gold, 200m ind medley, 200m breast, silver 100m breast, bronze 100m ind med; Michael Miller, gold 100m breast, 100m fly, silver 100m ind med, bronze 50m breast.

50-54 years: Brian Archibald, gold 50m free.

60-64 years: John Higgins, bronze 50m front crawl; David Freeland, bronze 100m breast.

65-69 years: Robert O’Hanlon, gold 100m fly, 200m fly, 100m back crawl, 400m ind med; Tom McQuade, gold 50m back crawl, silver 100m breast, bronze 50m breast.

75-79 years: John Brogan - gold 50m fly (Scottish record), 100m free (Scottish record), 100m ind medley (Scottish record), 50m free (individual trophy for exceptional swim); William Groves - gold 200m back crawl, silver 50m back crawl, 100m back crawl.
