Milngavie and Bearsden youngsters among badminton title winners

High School of Glasgow pupils from Milngavie and Bearsden were among those who struck gold at the recent Glasgow Schools Badminton Championships at Bellahouston Academy.

The youngest players from second year - 13-year-olds Maxwell Wang and Lucy Sillars, both from Milngavie - won the under-14s mixed doubles competition.

And Annabel Davies from Bearsden, with partner Angelina Antomartin from Glasgow, won the under-14s girls’ doubles.

Lucy with partner sister Emily (16), of fifth year, competed in the under-19s girls’ mixed doubles and took silver.

Sixth year High School pupil Guan-An Chen (17) from Milngavie won an impressive three badminton golds.

He was crowned the under-19 singles champion, the under-19s doubles champion with partner William Zu from Bearsden, and the under-19s mixed doubles champ with fifth-year pupil Rachel Sugden from Balloch.

Rachel (16) also took three golds, in the mixed doubles, the under-19s girls’ singles, and the under-19s girls doubles with partner Sanaa Suverna (16) from Glasgow.

High School pupils winning individual silver awards were Akshat Gupta in the under-14s singles, Cameron Virdee in the under-16s singles, Sanaa Suverna in the under-19s girls singles.

And team silvers went to Varnit Gupta and Jay McMillan in the under-19s boys’ doubles, as well as Kenny McClymont and Maxwell Wang in the under-14s boys doubles.
