Milngavie and Bearsden ASC celebrate fantastic year

Winners were -

Girls: 9 years and under - champion Olivia McKnight, 2nd Grace Cameron, 3rd Ellie Hall & Ellie Burns.

10 years - champion Katie Lambie, 2nd Abigail Hill, 3rd Grace Noonan.

11-12 years - champion Kirsty Wicklow, 2nd Lauren McGhee, 3rd Eva James & Amy Shiels.

13-14 years - champion Kirsty McNair, 2nd Eva Alguero, 3rd Hannah McCulloch.

Open - champion Zoe MacDonald, 2nd Ellis Shiels, 3rd Rachel Gillespie.

Boys: 9 years and under - champion Callum MacArthur, 2nd Lewis Stevenson, 3rd Zan Ladinik.

10 years - champion Fraser Donaldson, 2nd Ruaridh Hall, 3rd Rory Treharne.

11-12 years - champion Callum Ferretti, 2nd Daniel McIntosh, 3rd David McCallum.

13-14 years - champion Blair Johnstone, 2nd Sam Camilleri, 3rd Alexander Hunter.

Open - champion Paul Stevenson.

However they weren’t the only awards handed out on the night. The Alison Sheppard Sprint Quaich (awarded to the swimmer breaking, by the greatest margin or coming closest to a 50m record in their age group during the calendar year) which went to Douglas Kelly.

The EDC Coaches Commitment Awards (awarded by the coaching staff to a swimmer showing consistent commitment to the sport) went to Sophia Bell and Charlotte Hughes and the President Cup (for outstanding contribution to the club or sport by a club member) went to outgoing president Guy Fletcher.

During the year club swimmers broke an impressive one national, 13 West District and 54 club records.

Douglas Kelly broke the national 14 year-olds’ 50m butterfly mark, as well as setting 12 new West marks.

Zoe MacDonald also set a new West record for the 16 years 100m individual medley while new club records were broken by Fergus Currie (2), Kirsty Wicklow (4), Zoe MacDonald 6, Douglas Kelly (19) and Ellis Shiels (23, including five Open).

Other highlights for the year included winning a silver and a bronze at the British Championships, while at Scottish National level Milngavie & Bearsden won 11 gold, 16 silver and seven bronze medals.

A further 30 swims made final and in total the club had 26 swimmers reach a national competition. They also made the Mini League A Final for the first time in three years, indicating how the junior side of the club is also thriving.

Head Coach Adam Riley said it had been a fantastic year all round.

He said: “The Learn 2 swim is growing, the club is very nearly at capacity and the swimmers are representing the club with distinction.

“It is good to have these award nights as it helps you to reflect of the season you have just had and gives you clarity on the goals we all want to achieve this year.

“This is a fantastic community club and none of these achievements are down to any one individual - instead it is a real collective effort so I would like to thank all those who are involved in making these successes possible from the swimmers, the coaches, the committees and the parents who dedicate so much time to this sport.”
