With five weeks to go, one of Scotland’s top racing cyclists has confirmed she will compete in the Matrix Fitness Women’s Grand Prix in Motherwell.
Charline Joiner is a member of Team WNT Cycling and will be riding in the event on Tuesday, May 26. As well as the women’s race, the event includes round 4 of the men’s Pearl Izumi Tour Series.
Spectators will have a close up view of the athletes as they race from Hamilton Road around High Road, Farm Street, Ladywell Road and Douglas Street on a 1.7km circuit.
Joiner came second overall in the Grand Prix event last year and she was a member of Team Scotland at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2010 Games in Delhi, where she won a silver medal with team-mate Jenny Davis in the Team Sprint.
Originally from Dunfermline, Joiner now lives and trains in Glasgow and is supported by Scottish Cycling.
She said: “Road racing is exciting for competitors and spectators, and the Matrix Fitness Women’s Grand Prix has attracted some of the best teams in Britain.
“We compete over five rounds and Motherwell is the only venue in Scotland so I’m particularly looking forward to that race.
“And it would be great to have some local support – the noisier the crowd, the better the atmosphere!.”
Teams signed up include Team Wiggins, formed by Britain’s first Tour de France Champion Sir Bradley Wiggins, and ONE Pro Cycling which includes England cricketer and Ashes winner Matt Prior.
