Local fighters get title shots

Three local fighters are aiming to win gold this summer.

Motherwell boxer Iain Butcher takes on Kevin Satchell for the British flyweight title in Liverpool on July 6.

Butcher, who won the British Masters title in December, is undefeated in eight fights and got in some valuable ring time last month with a comfortable 60-54 points victory over Hungarian Andras Varga in Belfast.

New Stevenston kickboxing brothers Jamie and Mark McGinnis are also aiming for further success in Cleland on June 1.

Jamie takes on Zltko Traichov Gadzhev for the World amateur lightweight title, while Mark takes on Alex Aitchison with the British amateur light-heavyweight belt up for grabs.

Meanwhile, Bellshill born Ricky Burns, who trains out of Fighting Scots Gym in Mossend, defends his WBO World lightweight title against Puerto Rico’s Jose A Gonzalez in Glasgow on Saturday.

Viewpark Boxing Club will be holding a home show in Tannochside Miners club on Friday.

Tickets, limited to four per person, cost £10 and are available from the club in Burnhead Street.
