LANARK United were holding their own in Saturday’s ETHX Energy Scottish Junior Cup third round home tie against Division 1 leaders Rossvale until the 27th minute.
It was then that Lanark defender Cammy Lawson was red carded for handling the ball on the goal line and preventing a goalscoring opportunity.
Chris McQuade scored with the resultant penalty and Lanark were up against it having made a promising start. The goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of the second division side.
Seven minutes after taking the lead Rossvale doubled it through Jay McKay. From midway inside the Lanark half, Corey Irvine passed to McKay on the edge of the Lanark penalty area. McKay’s quick feet saw him side step a challenge to create the half yard of space needed which was enough for him to drill the ball low just inside the helpless keeper’s right hand post.
Just on the stroke of half-time the lead was trebled. From deep within the right hand side of his own defensive area Rhys Donaldson struck a long diagonal ball forward towards the left for Fraser Team to chase.
The advancing Fraser caused Renwick to pass the ball back towards his goalkeeper, not knowing that he was on his way out to collect the ball. It passed over the head of his keeper which resulted in Fraser having the easiest finish of his life into an empty net.
Despite their numerical disadvantage Lanark began the second period as they had the first. One would have been forgiven for not believing they were down to 10 during the early exchanges, especially when Lanark’s Christie’s overhead kick went high over Bowskill’s crossbar seven minutes after the restart.
It took Rossvale 11 minutes of the second half to cause some form of effect to the Lanark defence which by coincidence was through another penalty. Ryan Coll drove into the Lanark penalty area from the Rossvale right and after playing a 1-2 with Team he was tripped just as he was about to pull the trigger.
Alex Cassells made no mistake by sending the Lanark keeper right while the ball went high to his left.
Rossvale went nap on 74 minutes courtesy of Team. Substitute Joe Bradley fired in a low pass to him on the edge of the Lanark penalty area and he picked his spot just inside Finnigan’s right hand post.
