SIX members of Rokuban Karate Club were promoted at the United Kingdom Traditional Karate Federation’s annual course and grading in Edinburgh.

The event held in Heriot-Watt University was attended by around 500 students from all over the world.

All six students took their grading exam under the watchful eye of three leading world renowned Japanese instructors from the Japan Karate Association (JKA) Sensei Mori, Sensei Naito, and Rokuban’s own chief instructor Sensei Kawasoe.

Five junior students earned their black belt (Shodan): Shelley Campbell (12) from Viewpark, Jamie Collins (12) from Newarthill, Nicholas Burke (10) from Bellshill, and Erin Callaghan (14) and Rachel Cunningham (14) from Hamilton.

One adult student, Dennis Crilley (43) from Coatbridge passed his second dan (Nidan).

Senior coach Pat Higgins said: “Congratulations to them all, they are a credit to the club and all their hard work, dedication and commitment has paid off.

“I would also like to offer a special mention to club instructor Davie Cunningham who worked tirelessly with the five junior students during their preparation for the grading exam.

“I’m sure he had a major influence on them being successful.”
