MOTHERWELL long jumper and sprinter David Martin has criticised the facilities for athletes at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility.

This comes after the Times & Speaker printed a letter from reader John Tierney last month which hit out at the lack of designated space for athletes and the high entry prices.

North Lanarkshire Leisure defended its position by claiming the facility had underperformed in terms of user numbers so they had to allow the likes of tennis and martial arts in the main sports hall in order to hit budget.

David, who competes for the Channel Islands club, said: “I would very much like to commend John Tierney on his letter regarding how local athletes have been treated at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility.

“Having moved Elite training groups to base myself primarily at Ravenscraig last March, I have experienced a number of laughable obstacles.

“I would like to publicly state that in my opinion the facility could be a phenomenal environment for local athletes to express their talent if it was run in a correct manner.”
