Motherwell went down to their heaviest Lanarkshire derby defeat for eight decades as Hamilton Accies ran rampant on Saturday.

’Well welcomed Accies to Fir Park eager for revenge after their League Cup exit earlier in the week.

The visitors have been one of the form teams in the Scottish Premiership so far this season since gaining promotion and showed why they are currently second in the table.

Accies leapt onto the front foot and Dan Twardzik could only palm down Anthony Andreu’s effort with Paul Lawson mopping up before Mickael Antonie-Curier could pounce.

Jesus Garcia Tenu and Daniel Redmond both missed the target and Jack Leitch deflected Grant Gillespie’s shot wide.

Henrik Ojamaa then gave the ball away to Ziggy Gordon and some slick passing gave Redmond another chance, but he fired over.

It was a warning that ’Well failed to heed and on 34 minutes when Zaine Francis-Angol fluffed a clearance ANDREU was on hand to put the ball beyond Twardzik.

Right on half-time the hosts shot themselves in the foot again as Lawson gave the ball away and ALI CRAWFORD rushed in to score.

At half-time Stuart McCall sent on John Sutton and Craig Reid for Paul Lawson and Stephen McManus going with five up front and it looked like the plan might work as they began to dominate.

Bob McHugh played a lovely ball into the box, but Sutton’s diving header was wide and then after McHugh bustled into the box the ball dropped for Sutton but Michael McGovern rushed out to smother.

Lee Erwin also came close forcing McGovern to save one header and then putting another into the side netting.

McGovern then pulled off another fine stop to deny Sutton on the half volley.

However, ’Well were then dealt a sucker punch as Kerr bundled over Louis Longridge and from the spot ANTOINE-CURIER sent Twardzik the wrong way.

Twardzik then hit a clearance straight at Crawford, but he dragged his shot wide.

However, in injury time CRAWFORD did claim his second and Accies’ fourth as he swept the ball in from a near impossible angle.
