The visitors were first to threaten early on when Carl Tremarco’s cross from the left was met by a looping header from Ross Draper which Craig Samson saved.

A sickening clash of heads between ‘Well’s Richard Tait and Caley’s Carl Tremarco saw both players grounded but thankfully they recovered after treatment.

Caley’s Liam Polworth narrowly missed with a shot before a fine ’Well move at the other end culminated in Craig Clay volleying powerfully wide after Louis Moult’s cross had been partially cleared.

Moult came close on the half hour mark when he shot into the side netting after Ryan Bowman’s knockdown.

A bizarre incident early in the second half saw Caley defender Brad McKay’s clearance inside his own penalty box just miss the far post.

From Ross MacLean’s subsequent corner, Moult headed over from a good position.

Inverness took the lead on 57 minutes when McKay’s cross from the right was bundled in off the bar by Tremarco.

And the visitors doubled their advantage 14 minutes later when Vigurs’ corner was converted from close range by Losana Doumbouya.

Moult hit a snap shot just over the bar before the Steelmen made a double substitution with James McFadden and Lionel Ainsworth coming on for Craig Clay and MacLean.

It looked as if Ainsworth had managed an immediate assist when his free-kick was headed home by Moult, but the ‘goal’ was disallowed for offside.

Caley then made certain of the three points with seven minutes remaining when Polworth’s shot from 25 yards beat Samson low to his right.

Tremarco was booked for a late foul on Tait, before Doumbouya volleyed a chance wide.

The home stands had virtually emptied well before the final whistle and Motherwell manager Mark McGhee had a lengthy chat with his troops in the dressing room afterwards.

They’ll need a much better display to get anything from this Saturday’s crucial home game against Ross County.
