Craig Slater scored his maiden goal in senior football to condemn Motherwell to their first home defeat since the start of December.

On paper this looked like the battle of John Sutton versus Kris Boyd, but in truth both strikers were perifiral figures, as others took the spotlight.

Gunnar Nielsen saved from Robbie Muirhead and then did well to prevent himself being rounded by Rory McKenzie, before ’Well had a decent shot on target.

When it came Carig Samson failed to hold Sutton’s low free kick, but Craig Reid slid the rebound wide.

Craig Moore, deputising for the injured James McFadden, had a header go wide and then Reid had one cleared off the line by Muirhead.

’Well have lost a number of goals this seasonf rom corners and a free header for Jackson Irvine, that although wide, once again highlighted their problems in this area.

Three minutes from the break the home side took the lead, IAIN VIGURS initial shot was blocked, but Moore presented him with another go which Samson got a hand to but couldn’t keep out.

Then right on half-time he could have had a second as Vigurs made a beautiful turn to get away from Lee Ashcroft in the box, but fired in to the side netting.

At the start of the second half there seemed little to trouble ’Well, Moore had a shot beaten away by Samson and Sutton had a free header go wide.

However, Kilmarnock came back into the match, Nielsen having to fist over a fizzer from Alexei Eremenko.

On 66 minutes the equaliser came as Irvine played a through ball and McKENZIE put a composed finished beyond Nielsen.

There were howls for a penalty from the Fir Park faithful as substitite Henri Anier went down racing for pass from Vigurs, but the Estonian didn’t appeal.

Samson then parried a Vigurs free-kick straight into Sutton’s path, however the ball got stuck under his feet and Vitalijs Maksimenko cleared.

Five minutes into injury time Eremenko blew a great chance to win it as his lob over Nielsen hit the bar, but there was still time for SLATER to run from halfway and bobble a shot past the ’keeper.
