Junior side Thorniewood United were back in pre-season training last week - just three weeks after ending the club’s 50-year trophy famine by lifting the Central League Cup.

Although some of the players have still to return from holiday the club has already begun the build-up to the new campaign which kicks off with a Sectional League Cup group match at Shettleston on August 8.

United’s aim will be to regain their Super League status following last season’s relegation, hopefully boosted by their cup success.

Manager Andy Frame said: “Without doubt that’s our target. We’ve managed to retain most of the squad from last year and freshened things up with a few new faces.

“And although players do need a break the fact that we played so late does mean that the players can maintain a bit of momentum in terms of their fitness.”

New recruits at Robertson Park this season include former Kilbirnie ’keeper Robbie Kellock, ex-Forth Wanderers full-back Jason Corbett and former Yoker man Stephen Wedlock who can play in defence or midfield.

Former Albion Rovers winger Declan Gallagher and striker Paul Hewitt, from St Peters Giffnock North under-21s are also new signings.

United’s first pre-season friendly match will be away to Cambuslang Rangers on Saturday, July 25, followed by games at Newmains on Wednesday, July 29, and Ardrossan on Saturday, August 1.
