Motherwell captain Keith Lasley’s says the squad’s renewed strength in depth is the reason behind their improved form.

In his first start for two months Lionel Ainsworth grabbed a double as did substitute John Sutton in the win over Hamilton Accies.

Lasley said: “There are all big games between now and the end of the season and the fact Accies had turned us over a couple a couple of times this season meant there were plenty of motivating factors.

“Hopefully the performance showed there is a group of players really fighting for the cause and it was nice to send the fans home happy as they’ve had to watch us not being very good at times.

“There have been some good positive signs over the last few weeks that things are coming together at the right time for us.

“The squad changed a lot in terms of personnel in January and we’ve had a lot of injuries throughout the season, but now I think you see some real competition and the squad is starting to look stronger and more settled which is really key.

“We are in a difficult position, but I feel like if we can put it together over 90 minutes then we are a match for anyone in this league.”

Due to the international break ’Well don’t return to action until the trip to Kilmarnock on April 4.

Lasley said: “The international break is a funny one after a result like that, you’d perhaps rather have a game immediately to build on it, but there are still one or two out so gives them time to come back and by the time we get to Kilmarnock the squad could be even stronger again.”
