Motherwell manager Mark McGhee has revealed that midfielder Carl McHugh will miss this Saturday's trip to Ross County as he's still suffering from the concerning after effects of a horrific head knock.

Irishman McHugh – who only joined from Plymouth Argyle this summer –sustained a horendous gash at Kilmarnock on the opening day of the season and hasn’t played a competitive game since being taken off that day.

McGhee said: “Carl is still struggling. This delayed concussion can be quite a nasty thing and it can be quite long in getting back from that.

“He’s not showing any signs that he’s ready to come back.

“It’s starting to become a concern. It’s a concern for the lad when he’s at home.

“It’s one of these things where apparently he can wake up and feel better. We’re hoping for that day soon.”

On a more positive note, McGhee said that defender Kieran Kennedy was nearing fitness after his recent illness problems.

The ’Well gaffer added: “Kieran’s fit again and well again but he’s lost about six stones!

“He looks ridiculous in comparison to what he used to do.

“We need to get him training, we need to get him fed and look after him to make sure he gets back to his full strength before we consider him and stick him in.

“But he’s on his way back.”
