Stephen Robinson: Motherwell FC manager reveals areas where he thinks his young team need to improve

Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson reckons his side showed they were slowly getting back to their best in Saturday’s frustrating 0-0 Scottish Premiership draw at Hibernian.

But, when asked if he was happy to only draw a game his team dominated, Robbo said: “I couldn’t have been any worse!

“Sometimes young players think what happened last year (when Motherwell finished third) will just happen again without that extra percentage and we just reminded them of that.

“Jordan White and Callum Lang were very good, Langy will get better and better.

“My back four today, Stephen O’Donnell is a class act, and to deal with Martin Boyle like we did, he’s one of the best players in the league and we didn’t give him a sniff.”

Having dominated most of this game, with 57 per cent overall possession, a disallowed goal and 17 goal attempts, Motherwell left Easter Road disappointed to only draw 0-0.

With new signing Stephen O’Donnell making an impressive debut at full-back, ’Well came close to making an early breakthrough when Callum Lang’s fine run and shot drew a brilliant diving save from home keeper Ofir Marciano.

A disappointing Hibs side – favourites after winning their first three league games – rarely threatened although Martin Boyle was foiled by goalkeeper Trevor Carson in a one-on-one and missed a second half chance at the near post.

But it was the Steelmen who bossed most of it and gaffer Robinson felt their disallowed first half ‘goal’ – when Jordan White’s volleyed effort from the edge of the box went in but team-mate Sherwin Seedorf was penalised for offside – should have stood.

Robbo said: “After seeing it back, the screenshot, as he hits the ball he’s not in line with the goalkeeper at all.

“What you would do for VAR up here? The assistant has called it from 40 yards away, the referee is not in line with the ball. I have seen them given them the other way and I am sure Jack (Hibs manager Ross) has stood here and said it should have been disallowed.

“We should have won 1-0, our performance deserved to. We showed how good a side we are in organisation and possession and creating chances against a good Hibs side.

“To come here, dominate and be in complete control of the game, I think our performance deserved the 1-0 result. The referee (Greg Aitken) has made a call but for me it’s a mistake.

“It was a very good performance from the midfield against very good players and now we need to follow that up with three points on Saturday.”

The game he was referring to sees Motherwell host local rivals Hamilton Accies in the league this Saturday.

With ’Well ninth on two points from four games and Accies bottom with no points from four matches, it’s a vital contest.

At least ’Well have star midfielder David Turnbull returning to his best form.

Robinson added: “He’s a talented boy, you can see that he’s getting better with every game now. Wee Al, him and Mark O’Hara were fantastic again. We have a great combination in midfield now and we are starting to get that in the forward areas as well.”
