How Motherwell have fared in their opening league fixtures over the past 12 years
Motherwell begin their 2019-20 Premier League campaign tomorrow (Saturday) with an away visit to Livingston.
But how have they fared on opening day over the past dozen years or so? In this feature, we take a look back at the Steelmen’s fortunes on day one for the last 12 seasons.
9. August 15, 2010: Motherwell 2, Hibernian 3.
Craig Brown was in charge at Fir Park as 'Well took the lead in 13 mins, through John Sutton, only for Anthony Stokes to draw Hibs level. Hibs then pulled clear with goals by Paul Hanlon (64) and Liam Miller (73) before Jamie Murphy made it 2-3 with a penalty (75).
10. August 15, 2009: St Johnstone 2, Motherwell 2.
Motherwell, bossed by Jim Gannon, came from behind twice to share the points. Murray Davidson put Saints ahead while Shaun Hutchison equalised on 56 mins. Saints got the lead back five minutes later through Graham Gartland but, five minutes after that, Ross Forbes brought 'Well level. Photo: Alan Watson.
David Clarkson, right, brought Motherwell level twice with both goals, in 33 and 81 mins. But Hearts won it through BBC pundit-to-be, Michael Stewart (25), Audrius Ksanavicius (40) and Saulius Mikoliunas (82). Photo: Phil Wilkinson.
Another early goal turned out to be the winner for Motherwell on this day, scored Steven McGarry after three minutes. In Motherwell's side that day was another current television pundit-in-waiting, Stephen Craigan (pictured).
