Conor Sammon: it's sink or swim for Well in Dundee clash

The second bottom Steelmen will go into the match one point ahead of their hosts and the Dublin-born 31-year-old is aware of just how important getting three points would be.Sammon said: “Dundee will be a massive game.“They got beat on Saturday so they’ll be looking for a reaction themselves. It will be another tough game for us, one that we’re all looking forward to.“We’ll be raring to go come Saturday. “With the strength we’ve got in the squad we can cause teams problems when we play to our capabilities.”Sammon was speaking after playing the last 17 minutes of Sunday’s enthralling 3-3 home draw against Rangers in which Peter Hartley netted an injury time equaliser.“Brilliant scenes and it was a good buzz to get that equaliser,” said the on loan Hearts hitman.“We were all laughing that it was Hartley who scored!“In fairness we’ve got some real targets from setpieces.“It must be a nightmare to play against.“Even Carl (McHugh) with his header in the first half, brilliant delivery, great header.“And Pete as well. We’ve got that physical presence where we’ll keep gambling. The fitness is there, the strength is there and it’s nice when it all comes together and clicks like that.“We’ve got four really good strikers here. There is real firepower, competition for places.“You know that if you’re starting you have to do well to stay in the team.”Sammon, Danny Johnson, Curtis Main and Ryan Bowman are battling it our for two starting spots up front.The big Irishman added: “It’s a good problem I’d say for the manager to have, to have all those sort of headaches.“But it’s up to us to push each other on and get the best out of each other.”And Sammon reiterated the post match words of Motherwell gaffer Stephen Robinson by saying he felt that the Steelmen should have beaten Rangers.He added: “When you’re going into the last couple of minutes and you’re actually behind, it’s a massive thing to get that equaliser.“But on the balance of the way the game went and the fact we took the lead twice I think we should have won.“We played really well and made it really difficult for them.“And I thought they got a bit of luck with their first goal, a deflection.“But on the whole, so many positives from our point of view.“The way we played, the way we finished the game, the intensity we played at, how difficult we made it for them.“When we did have the ball we played some really good stuff.“Persistence pays off with a great delivery from the corner and a great goal as well for Pete.“There’s a real togetherness here. You can tell the success they’ve had the last few years under the manager.“That team spirit, everyone’s pulling in the same direction.“You can see what it means to all of us, how desperate we are to do well.”Sunday’s draw gave Well their first league point of the season and lifted them off the bottom.The fine display was like chalk and cheese in comparison to their previous home match, a 1-0 loss to Hamilton Accies.“I really think that can kickstart our league season now,” Sammon said.“I think if we had lost three in a row, the way the games have gone and how we’ve played in the games, we would be really frustrated.“It was a different game altogether from Hamilton.“Hamilton in fairness to them had come in with a game plan where they are looking to probably frustrate you a bit more.“Rangers is a much more open game, there’s more space for our attacking players to create.“The atmosphere adds to it, of course it does.“The energy in the stadium, both sets of fans going back and forth.“And the weather the way it was, the early kick-off.“It just makes for a brilliant game and it was a very enjoyable game to watch I would think.”
