Concussion woes shock 'Well gaffer

Midfielder Carl McHugh and striker Craig Moore are both suffering from delayed concussion and face lengthy spells on the sidelines.

McGhee said: “Carl’s delayed concussion syndrome didn’t kick in until three days after he was injured at Kilmarnock on the opening day of the season.

“The recovery period can be quite prolonged and we’re keeping checks on him.

“In the last few days he has improved.

“But when he is deemed better we have to cool his jets until the doctor steps in and says he’s fit enough to play.

“Craig Moore has exactly the same thing as Carl.

“I’ve never known anything like it before and then two happen at the same time.

“It is the new metatarsal.

“They are very serious injuries and we have to treat them with the utmost caution.

“Neither of the boys will be pushed.

“They will play when they are ready and the doctor declares it.”

Irish ace McHugh (23) has previously starred for Bradford City and Plymouth Argyle and joined Motherwell this summer.

Plymouth fans rated him highly and were upset that he left the south coast club after previously telling manager Derek Adams about his intention to stay.

But McHugh endured a nightmare start to his career north of the border when he sustained a horrendous head gash after an early collision with Killie’s Dean Hawkshaw at Rugby Park on August 6.

Although the injury looked horrendous, nobody could have foreseen that McHugh would still be out of top team action six weeks later.

And Moore – who is on a season’s loan at Ayr United – suffered secondary concussion after being knocked cold in a 1-0 Betfred Cup defeat to St Mirren on July 19.
