Bellshill Athletic went out of the Euroscot Engineering Central League Cup on Wednesday night when they went down at Maryhill in a penalty shootout.
The Central League First Division rivals drew 1-1 in their second round clash but it was Glasgow side who went through after winning the penalty decider 3-2.
The defeat leaves Bellshill free to concentrate on their bid to gain promotion and it’s back to league business on Saturday when the Central First Division table toppers face Carluke Rovers at Tileworks Park in Stonehouse, the switch of venue caused by recent vandalism to Carluke’s pitch.
It’s a battle between the top two sides in the division, Bellshill sitting nine points clear of Carluke following three wins in six days.
Carluke have also played a game more and Athletic’s main rivals for the two promotions spots are Dunipace and Lesmahagow, both 11 points behind but with three games in hand, and Blantyre Vics who are 16 points behind with seven fewer matches played.
Meanwhile Thorniewood have a mountain to climb to avoid heading in the opposite direction as Wednesday’s 5-3 loss at Pollok latest results left them nine points from safety with just four games left to play.
Next up is a trip to Ayrshire on Saturday to take on Largs Thistle.
