Bellshill gave their hopes of promotion a massive boost on Wednesday night with a 1-0 win away to Central League First Division rivals Lesmahagow.
Craig Holmes got the vital goal for Brian McGinty’s side a minute before the break.
The victory stretched Athletic’s advantage over Lesmahagow, who dropped to sixth in the table, to 11 points although ‘Gow still have three games in hand.
The other two sides in the frame for the two promotion spots also played each other with Dunipace beating Blantyre Vics 3-1.
But while Bellshill bid to regain their Super League status, it looks increasingly likely that Thorniewood will be heading in the opposite direction.
The Viewpark side lost 3-0 at home to Shettleston on Wednesday to leave them rooted to the foot of the First Division table and six points adrift of safety with just seven games left.
Next up for Bellshill is an away match at St Anthony’s on Saturday, while Thorniewood are at home to Cumbernauld United.
Meanhile one Bellshill side are already celebrating title success as the club’s under-19 side captured the Lanarkshire League title after closest rivals Aston Villa were beaten.
