Bellshill Athletic stunned West of Scotland Cup holders Arthurlie with a 4-0 demolition of them at Rockburn Park in the third round on Saturday.
They sent the Barrhead side and their large support home well beaten after an excellent performance.
‘Hill keeper Mark Peat – who was playing with an injury – saved a first minute Devlin free-kick and two minutes later McDowall headed a goalbound Young shot behind.
Bellshill drove forward and a fourth minute Morton shot went narrowly over the top before Arthurlie keeper Nugent saved a close range Henderson attempt.
A Nichol free-kick was saved by Nugent and a Brunton header was cleared by Rushford beforeBellshill went ahead after seven minutes when Nichol fired a McGrath cross into the net.
Peat then saved from McGregor and Gribben as the visitors pushed forward in search of an equaliser.
ABrunton shot was saved by Nugent and Blakey headed a Morton shot off the goal line before Athletic doubled their lead in the 38th minute when Morton raced past three defenders and fired the ball into the net.
In the last action of the first half Nugent saved from Nichol and Henderson fired the rebound over the bar.
Arthurlie pushed forward from the restart and Peat did well to keep out attempts by Carrol and Gribben.
A Brunton shot went narrowly over the top and Nugent saved a McDowall free-kick before Bellshill went three goals ahead in the 64th minute when McGrath shook off ‘Lie defenders Rushford, Gair and Blakey and fired the ball into the net.
A McGregor shot went wide and Peat saved from McTernon as the visitors attempted a fightback.
The Bellshill defence, with Ferguson outstanding, coped comfortably with the visitors’ attempts and Nichol and Henderson went close before McGrath added a fourth goal in the 76 th minute to ensure Bellshill a place in the quarter finals of the competition.
With only the keeper to beat Morton fired the ball over the bar in the 86 th minute and in stoppagetime Henderson sent a Nichol cross wide from six yards as the ‘Hill chased a fifth goal.
Bellshill are back in cup action this Saturday, April 2, when they have a home tie against Neilston in the first round of the Euroscot Engineering League Cup. A similar result to last Saturday would do nicely!
