Nostalgia in pictures: Motherwell's last wins against Rangers

It’s often said that history repeats itself, but Motherwell fans will be hoping that’s not true when their team host Rangers this Sunday, January 17, unless, of course, it’s specific pieces of the past such as ones witnessed three or five years ago.

Motherwell’s record against Rangers, like that of most teams, isn’t a happy one, having lost 208 of their 305 games against them since 1904 and won only 44.

The last time they picked up so much as a point against the Glaswegian giants was in 2018 – twice, in fact, having drawn against them 3-3 in August of that year and 2-2 in March – and their last victories were in October the year before, 2-0 in a Betfred League Cup semi-final, setting up a 2-0 defeat by Celtic in the final the month after, and two years prior to that, 3-0 at home and 3-1 away in May 2015 in that year’s Premiership play-offs to secure their top-flight status and consign Rangers to a further season in the tier below.

Rangers have since overcome that play-off setback and look to be on course to claim this season’s Premiership title, sitting top of the table with 65 points from 23 games. That’s 21 ahead of second-placed Celtic and 47 more than 10th-placed ’Well.

So far this season, Motherwell have lost 3-1 away to Rangers last month and 5-1 at home in September, and last season they lost to them 2-0 at home and 2-1 away.

The North Lanarkshire side, now managed by Graham Alexander, host Steven Gerrard’s runaway league leaders at Fir Park at noon on Sunday.
