Figures released by the Department of Work and Pensions show unemployment in the Westminster constituency which covers Motherwell, Wishaw and part of Bellshill has fallen 16 per cent on this time last year.

In March 2015 the rate which those claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance or out-of-work Universal Credit stood at five per cent and a year on has fallen to 4.2 per cent.

Unemployment has fallen more quickly in Motherwell and Wishaw than it has across Scotland and the UK which decreased by 6.3 per cent and 7.4 per cent respectively.

Motherwell and Wishaw MP Marion Fellows said: “I am really pleased to see that unemployment within the constituency has fallen and that more people are able to get back into the workplace.

“The Scottish Government has gone to great lengths to protect jobs in the community, particularly in our iconic steelworks. But there is work still to be done.”
