Road closures as gas work nears its end

There will be several closures of the junctions with Hamilton Road.

This work is part of a £500,000 programme that involves the replacement of old, metal gas mains with new plastic pipe to ensure a continued safe and reliable supply in the town.

SGN spokeswoman Claire Buchanan said: “As part of this project, we have now started work in Hamilton Road. Most of our work will be on the footpath, however at times we will be working on the road.

“For everyone’s safety it will be necessary to put some road closures to be put in place as our work moves along the road.”

From today (Thursday) the junction of Nigel Street with Hamilton Road will be closed for five days.

The junction of Malcolm Street with Hamilton Road will be closed for five days from Tuesday, October 4, and the junction of Airbles Road with Avon Street will be closed from October 10-15.

During the school holiday week of October 15-23 the junction of Hamilton Road and High Road will be closed.

That will then just leave work in the area between Cameron Street and Douglas Street to be carried out in order to complete the scheme.

Diversions will be in place relevant to each of the closures.

Ms Buchanan said: “We understand that Hamilton Road is a very busy route in Motherwell and we’re sorry for any inconvenience caused by our work.

“We would like to thank residents and road users for their continued patience while we complete our essential work.

“The last part of the overall project will take place between Cameron Street and Douglas Street. All being well, it anticipated that this will be completed by the end of October.”

Last month SGN were told to stop work in Hamilton Road by North Lanarkshire Council until they entered into discussions with SPT to produce a better traffic management scheme after receiving complaints.
