The centre of Motherwell ground to a halt last week as a gas leak caused police to close access to two of its busiest streets.

Emergency services rushed to the scene around 12.45pm on Thursday soon after a smell of gas towards The Loaning end of Hamilton Road was reported.

The police closed off West Hamilton Street from its junction with Watson Street to its junction with Hamilton Road as well as a large section of Hamilton Road right down to its junction with The Loaning.

In addition 13 people were evacuated from their homes and taken to nearby Dalziel High while the situation was resolved.

These precautionary measures were carried out before Scotia Gas Networks (SGN) arrived and identified a leak in a service pipe supplying four properties.

Engineers got to work and around two hours after the initial call was made had fixed the problem and the emergency services left the scene with the roads being reopened.

A spokesperson for Scotia Gas Networks said: “We had nothing to do with the scale of the road closures, the police took that action before we arrived as a precaution and it is better to be safe than sorry in these situations.

“Once our engineers arrived on site they quickly identified the problem and had it fixed that very same afternoon.

“It seems a service pipe which supplied four properties had got damaged somehow, but this is not particularly unusual.

“It seems the traffic issues caused made the situation seem worse than it was, but we are not treating it as a major incident, just one that had to be dealt with.

“A report will be carried out, but hopefully that is the end of the matter.”
