Fewer accidents on Scotland’s roads in 2019

Despite an overall drop in the number of accidents, the number of road deaths in Scotland increased in 2019.

A total of 168 people were killed in road accidents last year, seven more than in 2018, despite the overall number of accidents involving death or injury dropping by 12 per cent.

Figures from Transport Scotland show the total number of casualties dropped from 8,424 to 7,594 – the lowest number since records began in 1950, with 2,001 people sustaining injuries.

Child casualties were at 759, a one per cent decrease in the previous year. Two children were killed compared to three in 2018, with 196 seriously injured.

Eight cyclists and 12 pedestrians were killed, an increase on 2018’s figures while eight fewer motorcyclists and three more car users died.
