Will it be third time lucky for road repairs?

Repairs to a busy road in Motherwell town centre are finally due to go ahead next weekend - at the third time of asking.

Drivers will face considerable disruption while the work to resurface West Hamilton Street is taking place as the road will be closed throughout the weekend.

The road will be shut from its junction with Watson Street to its junction with Hamilton Road from 7pm on Friday, March 13, until 6am on Monday, March 16.

Diversions will be in place with traffic which would normally access West Hamilton Street from Hamilton Road being rerouted along Muir Street, Hope Street, Menteith Road and West Hamilton Street.

Vehicles travelling in the opposite direction will face an even longer detour along Brandon Street, Windmillhill Street, Airbles Road and Hamilton Road.

The work was originally due to take place during the first weekend in December.

However it was put on hold by North Lanarkshire Council after a barrage of complaints about the disruption the scheduled date would have to Christmas shoppers during one of the town centre’s busiest weekends of the year.

It was then rearranged for February - only to be called off again because it was likely to be too cold and that the temperatures wouldn’t allow concrete to set.

That decision came under fire from Motherwell councillor Michael Ross who said: “How do they manage to build roads in Siberia?”

Although the road will be closed to all vehicles except works traffic, pedestrian access will be maintained.
