Police have responded to complaints about rowdy daytime behaviour by putting a dedicated officer on the beat in Motherwell town centre.
PC Brian Ratcliffe says he wants shoppers to feel safe and is working with traders and CCTV operators to crack down on shoplifters and those whose anti-social conduct is blighting the area.
He said: “There have been numerous complaints about the town centre, with members of the public complaining there is no police presence.
“Senior management are happy to address that so I, accompanied at times by a colleague, will be here from nine to five each day.
“Issues include shoplifting, drinking in the street and substance abuse. People feel intimidated and we want to re-assure them that when they go shopping in Motherwell they will be safe.”
The Motherwell Cross area has been particularly problematic and it’s hoped a regular police presence will deter offenders.
PC Ratcliffe warned: “People who commit offences will be dealt with robustly.
“I’ve worked in Motherwell for 11 years and know the area well. If anyone has issues they should feel free to approach me and I’ll be happy to assist.”
