TESCO has become the latest supermarket giant to announce plans to open a store in Motherwell.
Following the recent closure of the Tilemania warehouse in Windmillhill Street landlords Bermar Properties (Scotland) Ltd are currently dividing the building into three separate units.
Tesco has agreed to take one of the units for a new Express store and a planning application has been lodged with North Lanarkshire Council to erect the necessary signage.
This will put Tesco in direct competition with the Co-Operative who last year received planning permission to open a food store around 100 yards away at the junction of Manse Road.
However, at present neither company is in a position to confirm when either is likely to be open.
This is in addition to Aldi, which is building a store in West Hamilton Street, and Sainsbury’s, who will find out next month if its appeal for the former bus garage site Hamilton Road has been successful, as well as the existing Asda and Lidl.
Gloria Coats, corporate affairs manager for Tesco, said: “We are delighted to be investing in Motherwell with a new Tesco Express store at Windmillhill Street.
“Our new store, located at the former Tilemania, will bring back to life a vacant unit and create around 20 new jobs.
“The Tesco Express will offer a fantastic range of quality products including fresh groceries, toiletries and household essentials.
“An Express is our smallest format Tesco store, and it’s really handy when you need something late in the evening, are looking for a sandwich on your lunch break or need to top up your weekly shop with a few extra essentials.
“In the coming months we will make more information available on recruitment and the store opening date. We look forward to bringing jobs and investment to Motherwell.”
Also coming to Motherwell is Dominos, who have received planning permission to open a takeway within the car park of Lidl in Windmillhill Street, adjacent to the police office.
