Local youngsters have been finding out a very im-paw-tant message about staying online, thanks to a police-led social media experiment.

Police Scotland’s Lanarkshire Division urged Facebook and Twitter users to share a picture of PC Greg Roberton with one of the force’s newest recruits - puppy Solar.

The aim was to show children just how far information posted online could travel - and Solar’s adventures did not disappoint.

PC Roberton, Violence Reduction and Safer Communities officer, explained: “The response to the experiment has been overwhelming, and I’m sure it has taught children a valuable lesson about staying safe online.

“The idea was to see how far Solar could travel to highlight to youngsters that information posted online really can go anywhere.

“We asked social media users to share the picture, with a quarter of a million people reached in less than a week.

“Solar is now something of a social media mascot, and has been seen and shared from East Kilbride to Essex, Dundee to Dubai and Chicago to Chile - you name it she’s been there!

“Even First Minister Nicola Sturgeon retweeted the picture, and I would like to thank everyone who did the same and made the project such a success.”
