A SEARCH to find Motherwell’s young community stars has been launched.

Motherwell Youth Voice is now accepting nominations in its popular annual Truth About Youth Awards.

The Motherwell Times-backed project aims to acknowledge the efforts made by those aged between 12 and 25 in their communities. The youth group is now asking parents, teachers, youth workers, carers and friends to nominate a young person who is going the extra mile to help make life better for other people.

Nina Mullen, chairperson of Motherwell Youth Voice, explains: “We are looking for young people who have achieved outstanding things within their community, contributing within their place of learning, citizenship, sports, health and wellbeing, entertainment and volunteering.”

Simon Knight, senior CLD worker for the Youth Work Team, added: “We’ve made it even easier for people to nominate someone in this year’s Truth About Youth Awards.

“Nominations can be made by completing the application form and e-mailing, posting or faxing it to Motherwell Youth Voice.”

The 2012 awards were launched at Our Lady’s HS last week with the help of Councillor Michael Ross and Felix Mulholland of Motherwell Community Forum.

Councillor Ross said: “There’s far too much negative stereotyping about young people and initiatives such as the youth awards tackle this false perception and show there is much to be positive about.

“I’d encourage people to get involved and nominate someone they think deserves recognition.”

Nominations are being accepted now until Tuesday, October 16.

A judging panel will then meet and shortlist applications to choose winners across seven categories.

Everyone who is nominated will be invited to attend Motherwell Youth Voice’s prestigious Truth About Youth Awards ceremony on Tuesday, November 6.

Motherwell Youth Voice was set up in 2009 as one of six youth forums in North Lanarkshire.

The forum works closely with a range of partners and decision makers to make Motherwell a better place for young people.
